Perfect Pumpkin

A recent outing to MENARDS/Home Depot
(our home away from home as I'm sure many of you can relate to)

I came across the most perfect pumpkin.

          • Fabulous soft grayish green/blue color
          • Great stackable squatty shape
          • Perfect size
          • Wonderful bumpy imperfect exterior

ahhh...lovely creations pumpkins are.

Surprise Treats

So this morning - I woke up early at 5!  I stretched…. I turned on the computer (I work from home so figured I start out the day and run through some emails)….., I went out the kitchen and turned on the coffee pot……

Sounds like a nice leisurely start to the day right?  So far....

So then I went the fridge to get my creamer for my cup of coffee and perused the calendar to see what might be on tap for the day......ACKKKK!!

Then saw that my 2nd grader had to bring treats for the class

 TODAY!!

Crap I totally forgot & didn't make anything.  Usually we do it the night before TOGETHER - since the treats are not for me (they are for them so I think they should play a part in putting it together - plus its FUN - usually!)

So off to the pantry I went to see if there was anything I could use...here were some of the thoughts swimming through my head this morning at 5:07 AM!:

could I send pickles?

How about saltines?

ummmm

Would betty crocker au gratin potatoes be considered a treat?

Fish sticks?

How about a big can of creamed corn?

Ugh

Then I think I actually woke up and had an idea

Take some gigantic marshmallows (left over from our fall camping trip)  -- she needed 23 treats and there just happened to be 23 marshmallows - hello...meant to be!

Melted some chocolate chips - spread on one end of the marshmallow - added some sprinkles and here we go.

I put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer for a bit

(had some coffee FINALLY!)

and came back to put in baggies and tied them with some extra ribbon.  Plopped them in a cute basket thing for her to carry to school.

Baby girl woke up, got dressed, came out over to the kitchen island for breakfast and saw the treats ready to go and her eyes got BIG and a huge smile was received.....

ahhh totally worth it for the quick easy last minute treats.

Departure from Decor - Home Is Mom

You know when you're little (or even when you're grown) thoughts of home almost always lead to memories of mom.

Earlier this summer, we lost our dad.  Right now we are in hospice with mom.

So obviously my thoughts are not turning to my own home and nesting but rather looking back to how mom always made the place where we lived into
HOME.

She was really the primary breadwinner for our family working full time and yet she took care of EVERYTHING else as well.  She made great comforting meals, she sewed, she knitted.  She went back to school and got her master's in Art - just for her with no thought of making income from it...just for her.  Which - I think - is actually pretty amazing.

The house was ALWAYS clean and picked up.  She had a very editing eye and was able to clear through the stuff of life and just keep those little tokens that were very special to her.  I never ever remember the house being messy.....she said it was lived in and not a museum (which was true) but she felt more comfortable when things were uncluttered.  Ahhh...I'd like to work to be more like her in this area.

I don't know how she did it all?!

So turning back in my thoughts now to how hard she worked to make our journey the best it could be.

The phrase that we kids (there are 6 of us kids) all remember her saying over and over is that she would "do the best she could at the point she was at."  So - meaning not everything was fair and equal all the time but doing the best at the moment was really a precious gift and a something we can all carry on for our everyday lives.

Mom always loved home decor books and magazines - I think i caught that bug from her and am so thankful that I caught a little bit of her style and her organizational skills....she is the QUEEN of organization though so I know I'll never be that good at it but I like to keep on trying.

So glad that I can just jot down some of these memories as we cherish the moments with her these days.

Pop O’ Color

I was inspired
She made me do it
I didn’t really want to
but I had to
go out
side
of
my
comfort
zone

Miss Donna from Funky Junk – having an colour challenge link up so it got me thinking about how to inject something new
You know I love me my hits red and my robin’s egg (otherwise I’ve more soothed by the browns, creams and blacks) and actually as of late have been removing color rather than adding as this is more calming for me lately.

I’ve been clutter busting around here.
But I was inspired…I wanted to DARE to do something different

I decided to work on our entry way coat tree
Here is the lovely before:
home 011

yes there is a coat tree under all that
 home 012

ok maybe it isn’t all that lovely…
in fact – is it really there?
must be cold, rainy and sunny here – hmmmm

ok here it is NAKED
( I wonder what kinds of hits I’ll get on this blog with the use of that word?!)
 home 013
yep – pretty boring

but good bones
 home 014
And here it is IN PROCESS
I think I was inspired to with orange because of the autumn season
but

hello

that is

kinda scary
home 059

It says to me

      • “road block up ahead”
      • “use caution on this roadway”

      • “fines double in the construction zone”
 home 060
Yep it is pretty orange
so toned it down a bit without losing the pop of color altogether
by wiping on some watered down aqua blue paint and then brushing it off – so it just has a hint and the orange is still there and vibrant but not overpowering

Isn’t paint lovely?

You can play without being committed forever

I wonder what color I will paint this next?
What do you think?

I’m thinking a deep warm red to spice up winter perhaps
ohhh or maybe a cool icy blue/gray….hmmm that sounds nice too doesn’t it?

We’ll see what happens when the mood strikes!
