flirty ruffled apron TUTORIAL

You all probably know how much I adore my aprons!

I decided to whip up a version of my own using some of my fabric stash…

and came up with

this:

northern cottage ruffle apron tutorial

Here’s how:

** Gather some fabrics that go together but
don’t MATCH exactly.

{I personally think the end result is
MORE FUN
when you mix it up!}

* Select your base lining size (mine was leftover cotton from another project)

home 022

* Cut rectangles of the 3 ruffle fabrics
(1 1/2 times as wide as your lining piece)

* Hem 3 sides of each of these
(one long side and the two short sides)

* Gather the top side of each of these ruffle pieces

home 023

* Pin the bottom ruffle piece to the bottom of the lining piece

home 024

* Sew that bottom ruffle on with a topstitch

* Determine where you want your second ruffle to be attached so that it overlaps the top of the bottom ruffle a bit

* Pin and Sew it On

home 026

home 025

* Same for your top ruffle piece

home 027

* Cut three long pieces of fabric for your waistband and each apron string

* Press each apron string in half the long way to make a long tube

*Sew along the long side and one end and turn right side out

*Sew the apron strings to the SIDE of your top layer piece

* Press your waistband piece wrong sides together (turn the long edges under 1/4 inch & press for a built in hem)

* Place this over the top of your top ruffle layer and over the apron string connections

home 029

* Topstitch in place

Now put on your apron, feel super cute and domestic, go make a cake, and flirt with your hubby!

{He’ll now officially think aprons are HOT!! }

{tee hee!!}

I adore the look of an apron wrapped around to skirt a chair

Go be sassy and
wear an apron!

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE

want a GO-TO recipe
that is
EASY
{even the kiddos can lend a hand}
and
Yummy
too?
This is it!

northern cottage pb chocolate fudge

Just take
  1. 1 cup of chocolate chips
    (milk chocolate or bittersweet – whichever you like!)
  2. Mix with 1/2 can of sweetened condensed milk
  3. Melt in microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes
  4. Stir – if not smooth yet, pop back in the micro from another 20 seconds or so
  5. Stir
  6. Add 1 tsp vanilla
  7. Stir
  8. Spread in greased 8x8 pan
  9. In a new bowl – mix 1 cup peanut butter chips with the remaining 1/2 can of condensed milk.
  10. Microwave same way as above
  11. Add the tsp of vanilla
  12. Stir, stir, stir
  13. Spread on top of chocolate later
  14. Cool
you can put in fridge to hasten the cooling…so you can eat it FASTER (that is one of the most important steps I think – the taste testing – to
MAKE SURE
it tastes okay to share (or not!)

WINTER BREAK LIST

Hooray!

Winter Break is upon us…

this means no school

(still some ‘real’ work for me & hubster)

but still a home-y cozy relaxed atmosphere with

no school bus

no backpacks

no lunches to pack

no homework

and ALL fun!!

We’ve assembled a list of things we’d like to do

during our break

(no guarantees that we’ll do ALL of them!
It’s a no pressure thing – just a reminder to slip fun into our days off!)

Mixed in with lots of reading, lots of baking
(& eating too)

and lots of just plain hanging out together!

Here’s our list:

winter list

p.s. I especially love that one on the bottom right
(nap = wishful thinking!) wink wink! ;)

** Notice there’s no sledding or snowmen or skiing… cuz there’s currently little to no snow here (or in the forecast!)  Huh what?
Midwest December with no snow? = odd – very odd!

S’more Kit

You all know I love s’mores…as evidenced in my treats
here at the cottage…

(see recipe for S’more Croissants here)

northern cottage blog - smore croissants

So I thought I’d put together a whole S’more package for a gift…

What do you need to make s’smores?

{ Fire }
(aka firewood, matches, maybe some kindling like pinecones, right?)

home 007

Below you can see the matches are held in this very vintage old match holder

ahhhhh (are other junk lovers sighing?)

home 010

And I put together some individual packets for s’more creation with the basics of chocolate bars, marshmallows and graham crackers

in a little bag, tied with twine and with a little
FUN TAG!!

home 009

All put together in this great vintage tool bin

home 008

I hope the recipient likes it as much as I liked putting it together!
